How Do Traditional Braces Work?
Traditional braces come in two main parts: the brackets that are attached to the teeth, and the long archwire that connects them. By attaching a thin wire to the brackets and tightening it progressively, you can gradually pull the teeth into the correct position.
You’ll visit our office for routine tightenings every six to eight weeks, and the overall treatment typically takes 18-24 months to complete.
What Orthodontic Issues Can Braces Fix?
Traditional braces are capable of addressing a wide variety of issues that you might have with the alignment of your teeth. We’ll give you a complete sense of which of your problems they’ll help you with when we meet you, but here are a few examples of issues this treatment can address.
Bite Misalignment
Overbites and underbites obviously have effects on your overall facial structure, but can also lead to serious health maladies. Chronic jaw issues like TMJ disorder and teeth grinding can all occur if your issue is left untreated.
Your top and bottom braces can be gradually drawn together with small elastics, addressing these bite problems.
Crowded & Crooked Teeth
In addition to their aesthetic impact, crowded teeth are also much harder to clean. This means that patients who have this problem often suffer from an increased risk of gum disease and tooth decay.
Braces can gradually pull the teeth apart over time, bringing them into alignment.
Gapped Teeth
Gapped teeth aren’t necessarily a health problem, but many patients aren’t the biggest fan of how they make them look. Thankfully, braces can easily draw gapped teeth together to give you a smile you can take pride in!
Caring for Your Braces
People are often intimidated by the idea of caring for their orthodontics, but once you get into the swing of it you’ll have absolutely no problems.
You will have to learn how to use special hygiene tools, like floss threaders and interdental brushes, in order to effectively clean in between your brackets and wires. You’ll also have to get used to brushing around your brackets.
It’s also important to avoid foods that can damage your oral appliance, like hard candy, gum, or chips. We’ll give you a complete list of foods you might want to omit when we meet you.
The most critical thing is to keep up with your follow-up appointments, seeing us routinely for tightenings and other routine care. If you’re ready to start your orthodontic journey, make an appointment with us today!
