You lead a busy life. Whether you work, raise a family, volunteer, or have hobbies that you’re passionate about, it probably sometimes feels like there’s simply not enough hours in the day to do everything you need to do. Wouldn’t it be nice if you could save some time on your daily routine, so you have more time for everything else? But while taking a shortcut to the office or meal prepping on weekends can certainly give you a few extra daily minutes to enjoy, there’s one thing you should never cut corners on: your oral health.
If you wear dentures, you already know that they need to be removed to be cleaned at least once a day and then again to be soaked overnight. But often, people wonder if they really need to take them out for that daily brushing. Here’s why the answer to that question is a resounding yes!
The Importance of Removing Your Dentures
Dentures can and should be cleaned at least twice a day after eating. For these touch ups, you can leave them in your mouth and return to your daily activities. But you still need to remove them at least once a day for a more thorough cleaning. This includes brushing all the teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush and gentle paste, flossing each tooth, and rinsing them well. During this cleaning it is also important to brush them on all sides, including the portion that contacts your gums. This will not only remove bits of food, plaque, and bacteria, but it will also eliminate any stuck-on adhesive.
Don’t Forget to Soak
In addition to removing your dentures to clean them, don’t forget to leave them out to soak each night after your evening cleaning and before you head to bed. Your mouth needs a break from wearing them, and they need to stay hydrated while not in use to maintain their moisture levels and remain in good condition. Unfortunately, if they dry out, they can become warped or cracked, which often cannot be fixed.
Remember, it’s important to care for your dentures properly if you want them to last as long as possible. This includes removing them for a deep cleaning at least once a day and soaking them in water or denture soak overnight.
