Sometimes in life it’s easy to know when it’s time to replace something. When your kitchen sponge is falling apart in your hands, or your socks have become threadbare there’s no question it’s time to toss them. But what happens when it’s something more complicated like your dentures? If you’re wondering how to know if you need new prosthetics, here are some telltale signs to look out for!
Broken or Loose Crowns
The main function of your denture is to replace your teeth, so if their own teeth are starting to break or come loose, it could be time for a new pair. Of course, they may just need a few repairs, however, should this start to happen call your dentist for an appointment to have them evaluated.
Bad Fit
Your dentures were designed to fit your mouth like a glove, so if they’re doing anything but that, its time for a closer look. Sometimes all they need is a reline and they’ll be more secure, however after multiple relines or in some more serious cases, it may be time to start over with a better fitting pair.
Foul Odor or Stains
While your dentures should come clean with proper brushing, flossing, and soaking, with time they may become harder and harder to keep fresh. If you’ve noticed an unpleasant aroma or stubborn stains emanating from yours, it could be a sign that it’s time to upgrade.
Unexplained Pain
Your dentures should fit comfortably in your mouth, with a heavy emphasis on the word comfortably. If yours are causing you pain out of nowhere, that is a good sign that they are damaged and need to be replaced.
Cracked or Warped Base
Often dentures can become warped or cracked if they dry out, which can in turn cause them to rub against your gums and soft tissues, creating sores and irritation. Cracks cannot be repaired, so dentures with this problem must be replaced, especially if they are causing you pain.
Remember, your dentures were designed to last for seven to ten years under ideal conditions. If yours are in this age range, it may be time to replace them because they’ve simply become worn out. There are of course instances where they must be replaced a lot sooner, but your dentist can help you make that determination should any problems arise.
