Dental implants are a fantastic solution for replacing missing teeth, but what happens if you need orthodontic treatment and already have an implant? It’s a common concern, and the good news is that having a dental implant doesn’t necessarily rule out orthodontics! Continue reading to learn what you need to know about straightening your smile, even with a dental implant.

What Is a Dental Implant?

A dental implant is a titanium post surgically inserted into the jawbone with a crown placed on top to mimic a natural tooth. Implants are stable and permanent, designed to fuse with the jawbone over time to become sturdy and functional. This stability is key to their success but can also cause concern when it comes to orthodontic treatment. After all, if they’re made to be permanent, can they be straightened with the rest of your teeth?

How Orthodontics Work

Orthodontic treatment, whether through traditional braces or clear aligners like Invisalign, involves applying controlled forces to move teeth into their desired positions. This movement is possible because of the periodontal ligament, a flexible tissue that allows teeth to be shifted and stay stable.

Can Orthodontics Work with Dental Implants?

Unlike natural teeth, dental implants are fused to the jawbone and don’t have a periodontal ligament. This means implants cannot move like natural teeth during orthodontic treatment. However, this doesn’t mean orthodontic treatment is off the table if you have an implant. It simply requires a different approach!

For example, your dentist can plan tooth movements around your dental implant. The treatment will focus on moving the natural teeth while keeping the implants in their current position. In some cases, their immobility can be used to provide a fixed point for other teeth to be moved around or against.

However, there are times when your implant will be a hindrance. In rare circumstances, your implant may need to be removed and replaced after your orthodontic treatment is complete. This is why the best time to get a dental implant is before getting braces or undergoing Invisalign.

So, while having a dental implant adds complexity to orthodontic treatment, it doesn’t make it impossible. With careful planning and cooperation, you can achieve a beautifully aligned smile, even with an implant already in place. Regardless, the first step should be scheduling a consultation to explore your options.
